A community can be defined as a group of individuals who are connected together by one or more attributes. It is a population united by a familiar thread to advocate and support one another. The Barren Heights Community Center is just that! This is a place where you belong; a place where your family is loved, accepted, welcome, and safe.
Our Community Center is all about building more compassionate communities in the Louisville area. It is a place for our entire community to connect – that includes guests, volunteers, and donors! It is for families who have attended a retreat weekend and want to continue building relationships, families who are hesitant or unable to attend a retreat weekend, and families who are looking for opportunities to serve others!
While our retreats provide a time of rejuvenation and reset, they are just the beginning. Our Community Center is where we see our vision of creating more compassionate communities for families who have children with disabilities truly come to life. We focus on forming deep, lasting relationships with faith, fun, food, and fellowship! We have seen marriages healed, hope restored, and families changed after getting connected.
We host a wide variety of men’s, women’s, couples, and family events that include activities such as nutrition counseling, mom’s night out, sensory-friendly Christmas and Easter parties, ice cream socials, movie nights, church services, group outings throughout the city, and more! The center also doubles as our administrative offices. We are open Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to 3pm and welcome any visitors who want to stop by to say hi and learn more.
“Having the local community center gives us a chance to re-connect with dear friends we have made on retreats. God’s blessing is on the ministry of Barren Heights and we always come away refreshed. ”
Melody, volunteer mom
“Date nights have been a great time to laugh and be in fellowship with other couples that understand the unique circumstances of raising and caring for a special needs child.
My wife and I can come and not stress over wondering if the child care is up to the task of caring for our son. He and our other kids always have a great time.”
Joel, guest dad
“Barren Heights has been such a blessing to us. It’s actually been an answer to many prayers. Being involved with everyone has allowed me to be around others who understand what it’s like to have a special needs child.”
Michelle, guest mom
"We were able to attend the date night last week. We had a good time together and K did so great! There was a volunteer with a guitar there singing Christmas songs to the kids. K looked like she truly enjoyed it! It was good to see her just being a part of the group! "
Kathleen, Guest Mom
