2022 Spring Campaign
17 Days of Celebration!
May 9–25, 2022
For 18 years now, Barren Heights has been changing the lives of families of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through retreats and inclusive events in the community. Due to COVID, we lost a summer of retreats in 2020 and held smaller, modified “getaways” in 2021. But now it’s 2022 and WE’RE BACK! As we move into our 17th retreat season, we’ll be operating at full capacity—four host families serving three guest famillies—and we need your support!
We want to raise $17,000 in 17 days to celebrate our 17th retreat season! Would you support us with a recurring $17 monthly donation? A one-time gift of $50? Maybe more? Every gift counts!
Will you prayerfully consider supporting our campaign?

What Will Your Gift Do?
PROGRAMS
At Barren Heights, 87% of our operating budget goes to programming. That means 87 cents of every dollar you give puts a smile on a weary mother’s face, brings out a laugh in a child who is safely playing on the playground just like the other kids, gives a married couple the first date they’ve had in years, and so much more. This year, we will host 16 family retreats (plus two specialty retreats) in Scottsville and more than 20 community events in the Louisville area. This includes everything from a Couple’s Cooking Class to an Ice Cream & Park Night to Summer Storytime at the Community Center. And all of these events are COMPLETELY FREE to our guest famillies. FREE! Because of your financial support, our families can have new, fun, safe, and accessible experiences without adding any financial burden to their already heavy plates. We love being able add value to the lives of our families!
FACILITIES
We are able to host free retreats and community events because grants and donations allow us to maintain and improve our spaces. Already this year we have resurfaced our courts and paved our gravel drive. Additionally, we have plans to outfit our courts for pickleball (everyone’s new favorite and accessible game!) and are getting ready to build a NEW Recreation Center that will have housing for host famillies, a sensory room for our guests, and a gathering area for activities when the weather keeps our families inside. Our full capital campaign to build this facility will launch later this year, but our Spring Campaign will be a great jumping off point as we prepare to make our retreat experience better for both our guest families and our volunteers!
Recreation Center
- Volunteer Family Quarters – We value our volunteers and want to make their weekends of hard (but fun!) work spent serving our guest families more comfortable, so this facility will add new and better sleeping quarters to our retreat center.
- Sensory Room – Our new facility will have a sensory room for our guests to use when activities at the camp seem overwhelming or when they just want to spend a few moments in a safe environment designed just for them. It will contain a mixture of sensory toys and calming devices and equipment that will be both calming and fun for our kiddos with sensory processing challenges.
- Indoor Recreational Space – This space would allow for indoor play during bad weather and give us capacity to lengthen our retreat season down the road. We will also utilize this area as the craft and game room, allowing the pavilion to be used primarily for dining and gathering.
Why Giving Monthly Matters:
Reduced Costs
Monthly giving enables us to spend less time and money on things like on planning, fundraising, and administration. With the time and money saved, we can focus more of our resources on our mission to love and encourage families who have kids with disabilities.
Sustainability
Fundraising is not the most important thing we do, but it is necessary. Much of our work depends on a reliable source of funds to ensure there are no gaps in the services we provide. We have been changing lives for 17 retreat seasons, and we want to go another 17 and beyond!
A Win-Win for You!
Monthly giving is easy and convenient for you! For many donors, small amounts of regular giving can be easier to plan for in family budgets. We offer a variety of different payment options so you can choose what best works for your family. Thus a win-win for everyone!
Exclusive Booster Program
We call our monthly donors our Barren Heights Boosters. As a Booster, you will receive quarterly giving statements, insider ministry updates, and a special monthly touchpoint sharing stories so that you understand the incredible impact of your continued generosity.
Campaign Giveaways
What’s a Spring Campaign without some fun giveaways? We have THE BEST supporters around, and we want to give back in the best way we know how—a fun and free weekend at our retreat center! At the end of our campaign, we’ll draw for not one, not two, but THREE nights at our Scottsville retreat center over this year’s 4th of July weekend (Friday, July 1st to Monday, July 4th). Can you imagine a better way to spend your July 4th than with your whole family or friend group at our private retreat center near Barren River Lake? Private cabins.
