During this global pandemic, we have all lived through an unprecedented time of uncertainty and social isolation. Many special needs families live in this isolation day in and day out, regardless of the virus. We are just getting a glimpse into those realities. The need is greater than ever. Families living with disabilities still need community and still need Jesus.
There are over 54 million families affected by disabilities in the United States. Of the affected families, 30% fall below the poverty line. 1 in 3 single mothers report having a child with disabilities, and families are 19% less likely to attend a church. As one of the most overlooked groups of people, there are very few places where these families feel loved, accepted, and safe.
While we’re eagerly anticipating the start of our Retreat Season, we’re not sitting idle as we wait for retreats to begin. Barren Heights staff and volunteers continue to point families to Jesus in new and creative ways. Through our Families Serving Families Initiative, grocery deliveries, pen pals, and our virtual campfire concerts, special needs families can still experience community.
I have never experienced an environment where I could allow my children such freedom to run and play – where there was no judgement– where we were safe to just be like a normal family…God reveals who he is at Barren Heights through the love of the families, both the guests and hosts. It was such a huge breath of relief and peace; I believe it is a small taste of Heaven. This weekend was a great reminder that He does not forget us but hears and knows our needs. We will forever carry the wonderful memories from this weekend with us.
While the above quote gives you a small snapshot into the big picture impact of a weekend at Barren Heights, we invite you to click on the photos below to read additional stories and testimonies that share the deeper impact of family retreats. Social isolation is the everyday norm for families like these — in Louisville, Kentucky, and across our entire region, country, and world.
And that is why we humbly invite you to support our mission today. The bigger goal is to impact one family, one person, one story at a time. Your support will bring special needs families the tangible, touchable evidence that Jesus loves them, today and every day. Together we can make a lasting impact for The Kingdom one person, one family, one story at a time.
We invite you to stay connected to what’s going on at Barren Heights! You will receive inspirational stories, ministry updates, event information, lots of fun pictures, and more!
